Use EndNote to Create Bibliographies

EndNote is a personal file management package which allows you to get citations from various sources and put them into your own manageable database.  You can use the citations in your database to "cite while you write" in Word and manage bibliographies more efficiently.

Install Endnote

Students:

To install EndNote on your personal computer, request an installation CD from ITS at 785-4544 or helpdesk@truman.edu. (Please allow 3 business days.) There is no charge.  When you leave the University you are to uninstall it as our license is for current Truman students/faculty/staff only.  It is already loaded on the lab computers.

Import citations from

Sort citations in your EndNote Library - by Author, Year, Title, Journal Title, etc.

Click on the column title for the author, year, title or journal title in your EndNote library.  EndNote will sort the information by the column title you choose. OR open References on the Toolbar and choose Sort References.

Choose the bibliographic style you want EndNote to use to format your bibliography - APA, MLA, Chicago, Turabian, etc.

Open Edit on the Toolbar and choose Output Style.  Then in the Output Style menu, choose Open Style Manager.  Choose the style you want to use.  It will appear at the bottom of the Output Style menu. Click on the style you want.

 Manually enter bibliographic citations

Choose References on the Toolbar.  Click on New Reference and fill in the boxes for the author, title, etc.

Search for references

If your reference library gets too big or you just can't remember the title or author of an article you want, you can search for it with keywords.  Click on References on the Toolbar then Search References.

"Cite While You Write"

Open up Microsoft Word.  Check to see if you have a link to EndNote by clicking on Microsoft Word's Tools in the Toolbar and looking for a link to EndNote.

Now you can begin to type your essay  in Microsoft Word.
When you get to a spot in the essay where you want to put a reference for a bibliographic citation, click on Tools in Microsoft Word and then click on EndNote.  Select the bibliographic citation from your EndNote library that  you want to insert.  Go back to Microsoft Wood→Tools→EndNote  and click on Insert Selected Citation.  The citation will show up in your Microsoft Word essay.

EndNote Web

Register with EndNote Web so you can search databases in other libraries and transfer references to and from EndNote on your desktop.
