1:3 - East side of the Square, 100 Block N Franklin |
From
newspaper accounts, one could get the impression that the east side of the
square was not a good place to do business in the early 1890s. The
stores seem to have changed quite frequently and all but one of the ground
floor businesses in this shot either closed or changed hands during the
first half of 1893. Working north along the block: Cross & Bro, Grocers,
106;
Cole & Green, Furniture & Undertakers, 108 (owner/name change Apr
’93); JE Owen, Grocer, 110 (closed June ‘93); L A Willard, Grocer,
112 (closed not long after Willard’s death in Feb ‘93); J F Whitacre’s
New York Dry Goods in the Wilson Block, 116-118 (closed Apr ‘93).
Upstairs at 102½, C L Lewis, Attorney at Law remained in the same
place for years. |
