Real estate dealer & entrepreneur John L Porter, owned numerous commercial & residential properties in Kirksville.  He also organized the Porter Coal & Mining and Pennsylvania Coal & Mining companies, owned mercantile stores & freight companies, and held considerable stock in two of the city’s banks.  His townhouse apartments, Porter Flats, were built one block west of the Square in the fall of 1890.
