Historical Sketch: Boy Scouts of
America was founded in 1910. Adair County Council number 740 was founded in 1926
and in 1928 became renamed as the Pershing 740 Council. In 1930, the Pershing
740 Council became known as the Central Missouri 653 Council. Today, the
Kirksville Boy Scout Troops belong to the Great Rivers Council 653, which formed
out of the original Central Missouri 653 Council. In Kirksville today there are
Troops 401 and 404.
While not much is known about the history of Kirksville’s Boy Scout Troops besides the information contained in the scrapbook, a photo of former Boy Scouts at Camp Winnetka in the 1930s can be found in “Adair County Revisited: Pictorial History of the 20th Century in Adair County, Missouri” (F 472 A2 A268 1999, Special Collections, Pickler Memorial Library).
