John M. Davis

John M Davis was born 25 Dec 1835 in Hamilton, Butler County, Ohio and moved to Kirksville shortly after the end of the war. He died in Kirksville 5 July 1927 and, according to his obituary, was buried at Forrest-Llewellyn Cemetery. Captain Davis was a member of the Kirksville post of the Grand Army of the Republic; his application for membership may be found in The Archives of the Corporal Hervey Dix Post, GAR (Ms Collection D1). These papers came to Pickler Memorial Library with the E.M. Violette Papers after his death in 1940. Just how Professor Violette obtained them is not known. |

The muster rolls for Company H are quite large and in extremely fragile condition so cannot be photocopied. The information on the rolls for each man who enrolled in the Company from the time of its formation in December 1861 through 31 Dec 1863 is summarized below. If the exact date of an event is not given, the date of the bi-monthly roll on which that event was reported is shown in brackets [ ]. This unit did not disband Dec 1863. It likely continued through
the end of the war but we have no documents beyond this date. According to
his GAR application, Capt Davis received a disability discharge in Mar 1864, so
the Company was still in operation at that time. |
