American Memory from the Library of Congress - "American Memory provides free and open access through the Internet to written and spoken words, sound recordings, still and moving images, prints, maps, and sheet music that document the American experience." The collections "chronicle historical events, people, places, and ideas." Searchable, and browsable by topic (including African American history, architecture, culture, environment, government, literature, music, sports, and war).

ArchNet Digital Library
ArchNet contains thousands of images with accompaning text for historical monuments and contemporary architecture in dozens of countries.

*EBSCOhost Image Collection - images of people, natural science, places, historical photos, maps and flags. Images are available in the following EBSCOhost databases: Academic Search Elite; MasterFile Elite; Military & Government Collection; MAS Ultra-School Edition; Primary Search.  Choose a database then click on the "images" button in the green bar at the top of the page.

EROS Data Center: Earth resources observation systems - satellite images, aerial photographs, and digital maps recording land-surface phenomena.  It is the largest archive of such images in the world.

Florida Photographic Collection - Over 100,000 of the photographs have been scanned and placed on this website.

George Eastman House - International Museum of Photography and Film   "Highlights include hunderds of Civil War photographs, and a slide show of images on the theme of racial stereotypes."

Google Images - Images that the Google search engine finds.

Imagebase - Over 40,000 images from the 19th and 20th century on a variety of topics.  Virginia Tech University Libraries.

Manuscripts and Archives Digital Image Database (MADID) - photographs, posters, drawings, text documents, and other images from Yale University Library's Manuscripts and Archives.

NASA Image Exchange (NIX)

National Archives and Records Administration  "The National Archives and Records Administration's holdings include an estimated eight million photographs and graphic images, plus an additional five million images in the Presidential Libraries and nine million aerial photographs.  To search for online images use the Archival Research Catalog.  Use the advanced search to limit a keyword search to visual materials."*

National Museum of American History (Smithsonian)  "The Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of American History is responsible for the collection, care and preservation of more than three million objects.  The online collections are a small percentage of this, but they reflect the museum's interest in social and cultural history. This is a good source for popular culture materials.  The online exhibitions include topics such as automobiles, the rise of the electric guitar, and a history of the lunch box in America.  Images can be searched by keyword, but browsing the subject categories is more fun and give a better sense of the flavor of the collection."

New York Public Library - NYPL Digital Gallery provides access to over 275,000 images digitized from primary sources and printed rarities in the collections of The New York Public Library, including illuminated manuscripts, historical maps, vintage posters, rare prints and photographs, illustrated books, printed ephemera, and more.

Perry-Castaneda Library Map Collection, University of Texas, Austin.  Electronic maps of all the countries and regions of the world; historical maps; thematic maps; links to other maps.

Perseus Project, Tufts University  - architecture, archaeology,  sites, coins, & vases.

Political Cartoons and Cartoonists  "An online e-text, this work discusses the history of political cartoons.   Ample illustrations are provided with collections of images arranged by artist or theme."

Prints and Photographs Online Catalog - from the Library of Congress,  provides access  to about one million digital images.

Public Health Image Library: PHIL - from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an extensive collection of still images, image sets and multimedia files related to public health.

SPIRO: Architecture Slide Library Visual Online Catalog, University of California, Berkeley 

Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery   Online images are being added to many of the descriptions, starting with the most prominent individuals.

Virtually Missouri - provides access to the special collections of Missouri's archives, historical societies, libraries and museums.

Yahoo Images - Images from the Yahoo search engine.  Click on the "images" button in the top navigation bar.
