Abstract: Kent Bergstrand, a student at Northeast Missouri
State University (now Truman State University), wrote The Battle of Kirksville
and the Battle of Vassar Hill as a class term paper and submitted it to Dr David
March, Professor of History on Oct 17, 1975. In August 1862, a skirmish broke
out in Kirksville, Missouri, between Confederate troops led by Colonel Joseph
Porter and Union troops under the direction of Colonel John McNeil. This paper
is 79 pages of text, maps and photographs relating to the two battles and
associated events and people. The color photographs are of Kirksville, Vassar
Hill and other Adair County sites connected with the battles as they appeared at
the time the paper was written in 1975.
