Historical Background: In late 2004, the Kirksville City Council sold 427 acres of publicly owned land surrounding Kirksville’s Hazel Creek Reservoir to a private owner. As a result of the sale, citizens of Kirksville became concerned with the potential environmental issues that could affect the public water supply, and, on December 23, 2004, formed the Hazel Creek Concerned Citizens Committee. Over the course of the next few years, the Committee attempted to return the land to the public by investigating the sale and use of the land as well as the associated environmental concerns, holding a rally, and voicing their apprehensions to the Kirksville City Council. The
archives of this committee were donated to Pickler Memorial Library
in September 2007 by Ron Gaber, Chair of the Hazel Creek Concerned
Citizens Committee. |
