Scope
These are the microfilmed original manuscripts of the Cheshire Quarter Sessions, which are the cases heard in the county of Cheshire in the Elizabethan and early Stuart period.
How to search the collection
“The first part of this series concentrates on two categories of material – written ledgers and order books. These list all recognizances, indictments, order and presentments during the period. All this material is of fundamental importance in providing an insight into the implementation and administration of justice as well as detailed information on numerous aspects of life in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
The second and third parts of this series incorporate the more detailed and analytical Quarter Sessions files. These offer the reader the full records of the officers of the court, including reports from committees and individual justices.
The foliation of a number of ledgers and order books is inconsistent and some volumes are not foliated. There are also a number of pages missing which, when checked, were found to be missing in the original material.” (from the first of Reel 1). There is a guide of sorts with the microfilm. It gives a cryptic listing of what is on each reel.
