Scope
“This collection of pre-Revolutionary era diaries provides a rich and authentic portrait of incidents, manners, customs, and details of life in pre-Revolutionary America. The records of farmers and businessmen are to be found here, as well as those of clergymen, soldiers, students, and physicians. The inclusive nature of this project will make it of interest to the general reader as well as to students and scholars of various disciplines, and to an even greater variety of topical researchers–from Indians and industry to epidemics and earthquakes. ” (UMI Research Collections – Massachusetts Historical Society Collections) Omitted from this microfilm edition, although a part of the Society’s collections, are diaries and journals readily available in published format, as for example the diaries of Cotton Mather and Samuel Sewall and John Winthrop. How to search the collection
The diaries are arranged alphabetically, by author, on rolls 1-11 followed by a roll of logbooks, roll 12, and a roll of orderly books, roll 13, also arranged alphabetically. Dates given for individual diaries, logbooks, etc. are terminal dates of entire volumes from earliest to latest entry. There is a printed guide (Guide to the Microfilm Edition of the Pre-Revolutionary Diaries – Microfilm F 67 M34 Guide) listing (1) a chronological index by beginning date of each of the diaries, (2) an occupation index, and (3) a roll contents list.
