Early American Imprints 1639-1800

Early American Imprints  is a microfiche collection of all known existing books, pamphlets and periodical publications printed in the United States from 1639-1800. It is based on the print compilation called American Bibliography by Charles Evans (Micro Reference Z 1215 E923) and the Supplement to Charles Evans’ American Bibliography by  Roger P. Bristol (Micro Reference Z 1215 E92334).

Some of the newspapers and periodicals were excluded from the microfiche collection.

Pickler Library has the First Series of Early American Imprints on microfiche. The library also has full-text access to

Early American Imprints, Series II: Shaw-Shoemaker, 1801-1819.   a comprehensive set of American books, pamphlets, and broadsides from the early 1800s, based on Ralph R. Shaw’s and Richard H. Shoemaker’s “American Bibliography, 1801-1819.

How to search the collection

All of the Early American Imprints are cataloged in Truman’s Library Catalog  and can be searched by author, title, keyword or subject. The Library Catalog record gives the location as Microfiche Cabinet 21 as well as the microfiche card number you will need.


Evans, Charles. American Bibliography. New York: Peter Smith, 1941. (Micro Reference Z 1215 E923).
This is the main bibliography for the Early American Imprints. It is a chronological list of all the books, pamphlets and periodical publications printed in the United States from 1639-1800.  Evans was able to complete the bibliography up to the letter M and 1799.

This supplement completes Charles Evans’ American Bibliography up to 1800.

This bibliography includes the titles in  Evans American Bibliography and 10,035 additional titles.
