Inventories of Historical Monuments: England, Scotland, Wales

Scope

This collection, compiled by the Royal Commission on Historical Monuments, is an illustrated inventory of historical monuments from England, Scotland, and Wales along with a concise account of monuments visited, and list of monuments that the Commissioners have selected as especially worthy of preservation.  Included in the collection is a glossary of architectural, heraldic, and archaeological terms as well as a map showing the topographical distribution of scheduled monuments and and an index.

How to search the collection

Arranged alphabetically by parishes, each parish lists monuments in these categories:

1)  Prehistoric and earthworks
2)  Roman monuments and Roman earthworks
3)  English ecclesiastical monuments
4)  English secular monuments
5)  Unclassified monuments

Guides

There is a glossary and index at the end of each parish helping the user find specific monuments by page numbers on that parish’s microfiche.
