Letters Sent by the Office of Indian Affairs, 1824-1881

Scope

This collection contains the letters that were copied into volumes known as “Record Books” and include instructions to superintendents, agents and other field officials as well as reports to the Secretary of War and other forms of daily communication.

How to search the collection

Most of the volumes are indexed by name of addressee with some index entries for subjects. In most of the volumes there are marginal notations beside transcripts giving page numbers of copies of other letters to the same person. Each reel has a brief explanation of what is on the reel at the beginning of the reel.
