Scope
These three collections contain confidential U. S. State Department Central files. Confidential U. S. State Department Central Files – Mexico, Foreign Affairs, 1950-1954, Confidential U. S. State Department Central Files – Mexico, Internal Affairs, 1950-1954, Confidential U. S. State Department Central Files – Mexico, Foreign Affairs, 1955-1959 are from the Foreign Affairs subject classification of the Central Files and include telegrams, airgrams, instructions, inquiries, studies, memoranda, situation reports, translations, special reports, plans, and official and unofficial correspondence. The Central files contain all instructions sent to and all correspondence received from diplomatic posts. This collection provides information on Mexico’s relation with the United States and other nations.
How to search the collection
Each collection contains a guide. From 1910 to 1963, the Department of State used a decimal classification system to organize its Central Files. The decimal system from 1950 to 1954 consists of ten primary classifications numbered 0 through 9, each covering a broad subject area. For example, in the classification number 612.94/2-1651, the 6 is the Class of Records standing for International Political Relations; the number 12 stands for the country number —-Mexico; the number 94 stands for the subject —–Japan; and 2-1651 indicates a document dated February 16, 1951. So the number 612.94/2-1651 indicates a document dated February 16, 1951 relating to the international relations between Mexico (12) and Japan (94). There is a guide for each collection with the numerical list of country numbers and the subject index for each reel.
